Lunch For English Speaking Expats... Bringing New Friends Together Weekly for Over 4 Years Fellini Ristobaretto, Montevideo: Sunday, August 1, 2010 UPDATE!! Updated meeting time: NOON
I was reading an article in the newspaper which said that in the department of Paysandu, people are organizing to take care of their business and their own homes because crime has increased significantly.
Organized residents call themselves "Citizens Defense Squadron", a kind of neighborhood watch. The neighbors sent a letter to President Tabare Vazquez asking him to take action on the matter because the problem of crime is increasing at a rapid pace.
In Paysandu, there are already two of these squadrons, one in the city of Paysandu itself and another in a small town called Guichón in the same department. The inhabitants of this small town say they miss the quiet that they had years ago, when they could sleep with the doors open without fear of being assaulted.
There are different views in government about these squads but what is becoming obvious is that if security does not increase the population's going to take justice into their own hands. Security is a prominent issue at the moment with one of the candidates in this years Presidential Elections (Lacalle) basing his campaign on the promise of re-establishing security throughout the country.
It's so sad-- the government morons are too proud and have egos too big to admit that they are both the cause of the problems and that they cannot possibly fix the results. This is an excellent turning point and I hope it turns toward the better, leaving people free to defend themselves. Maybe it will force the gnocchis to admit to painting themselves into a corner by forcing the country to accept generic government-issue "security", simultaneously trying to disarm the law-abiding population, and throwing people in jail for defending their families and property when government could not possibly help them.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 4217
