The NZFSU began operation in 2006 in Uruguay wuth the intention of bringing New Zealand state of the art farming methods to Uruguay. The global financial crisis took a toll on its operations causing a $45.9 million dolar net loss this year. Management, however, has a plan in place that will bring it to break even in two years. It has reached some milestones, however, the main one being that it is now the largest milk producer in Uruguay. Revenue during 2008/2009 doubled, but farming expenses also doubled, mainly labor, feed and pasture maintenance.
