Gov't to build new port facilities

Roughly 70 percent of Montevideo's imports and exports pass through its river and maritime transportation system. It is Latin's fourth larges port and its main port for refrigerated goods.

The Uruguayan government will further improve the port's activities through an expansion project that will build a new all-purpose wharf and deepen the current access channel. This will allow larger vessels to access the port.

Government to implement measures to tame inflation

The Uruguayan government will be personally attempt to control the prices of certain commodities to tame inflation levels in the nation, according to Bloomberg.

Among the measures that the government will do is to lower fuel costs, asking supermarkets and stores to reduce food prices, and uring congress to bring down its national sales tax.

Inflation in December hit 9.2 percent, much higher than the government's target of 3 to 7 percent.

Lightning Takes a Toll of 52

Storms could be a devastating and a very unfortunate natural phenomena to hit any individual or business. A recent lightning storm has took a toll on the business of one farmer as fifty two of his cows died out of signs of being electrocuted. Uruguayan full meat tracing by 2010

Meat is one of Uruguay's most important products. In fact, it already has overtaken Argentina, a world power in meat production, in the amount of meat produced and exported.

There is a need to find out if there's something going wrong with products and where it occurs in the production chain. In the meat industry, this is called meat tracing.

In line with this, the Uruguayan Meat Institute said that there will be full monitoring and tracing of the entire Uruguayan meat market by 2010.

Farmers sell cows cheaply due to drought

A drought that hit Uruguay, the worst in 80 years in some areas, has forced cattle owners to sell their cows at surprising prices of around $10 to $40 each. Despite this, a lot of farmers see theirselves losing their cattle to the drought.

The national government has already responded to this and will be providing loans to farmers to buy fodders for their cows.

Uruguay gains record high beef exports

Uruguay recorded a record high of beef exports amounting to $1.3 billion for the first ten months of the year, a 55% increase in value compared to the same period last year.

The number one market is still Russia, which seems to have an insatiable appetite for expensive steaks, the European Union, and the United States. Uruguay took advantage of the fact that Argentina, a major competitor in the industry, went out of the market for five months this year.

Police intercepts gold, silver smuggling operation

Uruguayan police officers are pleased to announce that they successfully intercepted a smuggling operation of precious metals last month.

According to the authorities, they stopped a truck containing at least 200 kg of precious metals driven by Brazilians. The precious metals were illegally transported, police said.

There is an ongoing smuggling scheme of silver and gold between smugglers in Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina.

Press Freedom Reform

Senator of Uruguay have moved to repeal a law that now curbs press freedom in their country. A legal reform was made that would decriminalized defamation in the county's Press Laws as long as the published new has correct and true information and involves public concerns or public figures.

The press reform now, needs the approval of the lower Deputies Chamber, before it goes to President Tabare Vazguez for signiture to be ratified.
