Model industry suffers from too skinny models

By Crissy at 01/31/07 14:53
Celebrities are getting skinnier and skinnier. Readers of Fitness Magazine are clamoring for a real woman size 10 or greater to grace the cover. In September, Madrid banned models who are too skinny. In December, Diane von Furstenberg, acting as president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, requested that the members take a stand about underweight models. Industry leaders such as Vogue editor Anna Wintour, designers Derek Lam and Vera Wang, have met with health and nutrition experts. All of this is after a model in Uruguay collapsed on the runway in August. She died of heart failure, possibly from being underweight.

More women filling defense minister positions in South America

By Crissy at 01/30/07 16:43
South America is a typically male-dominated culture. The trend of women in positions of power is a little surprising. One-third of defense head posts in South America are filled by women. Uruguay's Defense Minister, Azucena Berruti, fired the head of the army for meeting with people opposed to the president.

Spain helps to mediate ongoing tension between Uruguay and Argen

By Crissy at 01/30/07 16:25
As the tensions between Uruguay and Argentina continue over the paper mills, Spain steps in to mediate. Argentina rejects Uruguay's two paper mills saying they will harm the environment. Uruguay denies the claims. The Hague International Court last week denied Uruguay's request to force Argentina to lift its blockades along several routes and bridges in Gualeguaychu, Colon and Concordia, connecting both countries across the La Plata River.
