Trade block failing Uruguay

Uruguay is no longer happy with its membership in Mercosur, a trade block launched in 1991. Brazil is trying to come to some resolution, but ultimately Uruguay will probably go a different direction. Uruguay has made deal with the United States that would make continued membership in Mercosur unnecessary.

Changes in Uruguay for the better

Things are a lot brighter since President Tabaré Vázquez took over Uruguay. He's instituted programs more beneficial for the people. Things have really been changing ever since former president, Juan María Bordaberry was imprisoned.

Uruguat to get XO laptops in February

This month MIT's One Laptop Per Child project is finally coming to Uruguay. In February the project is rolling out about 2500 of its $150 laptops to eight countries. The XO machines are intuitive and kid-friendly.

Uruguay's forward injured and out for season

Uruguay's forward, Gustavo Varela, will be out the rest of the season with a knee injury. On Saturday during a Bundesliga match against Hertha Berlin, Varela was removed from the game in th 71st minute because he ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee. He will undergo surgery within the next few days and be recovering for at least six months. His team did with Saturday's game 2-0.

More road blockades against Uruguay

Two more Argentine cities have joined the roads blockade against Uruguay. Colón and Concordia residents started their protests yesterday at 6pm and were supposed to last until today at 1am. Residents from Gualeguaychú have been staging protests for two months. Argentina claims that a Uruguayan pulp mill will be harmful for the environment, but Uruguay denies the claim.

Uruguay will host children's World Cup

On February 18 the first World Cup for children 14 and under will take place in Uruguay. There will be 1000 from 32 teams. The countries represented will be Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, the United States, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Guatemala, Venezuela Argentina, and Uruguay.

Uruguay's bishop is interim bishop to Cuba

Cuba is getting the first woman bishop. She was just appointed by the Episcopal Church. The church feels it is more about gifts and service than gender. Until this milestone appointment becomes complete Cuba's interim bishop will be Miguel Tamayo, who is Uruguay's bishop.

Uruguay banks human breast milk

Brazil has 20 years experience in banking human breast milk. The program is done in an effort to reduce infant mortality rates. Uruguay has already imported the program. Now Brazil will be helping the Dominican Republic setting up the same program.

Tonga's in the cup. Will Uruguay go?

Tonga gave South Korea a good beating and won 85-3 so they're going to the World Cup in France. Pool A will consist of England, South Africa, Samoa, the United States, and now Tonga. Uruguay and Portugal have yet to decide the 20th and final place.

No smoking in public buildings

Uruguay has banned smoking in public buildings. That was pretty much a given since the President is a medical doctor. Not only is he a doctor, but he's also an active cancer specialist.
