Missing soldiers found

Uruguayan troops have been in Congo Kinshasa since 2001 as part of UN forces. The Congo jungle swallowed the vehicle that an officer and four soldiers were riding in. Fortunately the five were recovered unharmed after an intensive search-and-rescue.

Protests planned against U.S. President's visit

U.S. President George Bush is touring Latin America in March. Despite the fact that Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez was welcomed in the United States in May 2006, protests against George Bush are planned in Uruguay.

Woman missing and assumed kidnapped

Natalia Martinez, 19, has been missing since January 22. It is assumed that she was kidnapped from a beach resort in Piriapolis. On January 25 Uruaguay asked for Interpol's assistance in finding Natalia. At the time there was no evidence of her death.

Education conference brings teachers together

The 10th International Pedagogue 2007 conference was in Havana the week of February 2. Elisa Figueredo, a Uruguayan teacher, told Prensa Latina how sad she was because she feels the government doesn't value education as she does. Education in elementary school is required and free, but many students stop attending as soon as they are able.

Uruguay uses IMF gold sales to repay loans

International Monetary Fund (IMF) and gold sales are buzzing. The problem is the IMF is facing a severe deficit for the fiscal year ending in April 2007. Many third-world nations, Uruguay among them, have been using IMF to try to solve their money issues and it's been working. But now the IMF has less interest income to cover its operating expenses.

Indian company has centers in Uruguay

Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) is one of the biggest IT companies in India. The firm recently opening a training center in Uruguay with 800 employees and is looking to expand to 3000 within the next four years. Tata also runs a delivery company with a division in Uruguay.

Uruguay wins friendly match

In the General Santander stadium with 26,000 fans, Uruguay bested Colombia 3-1 in a friendly. The stadium is close to the Colombian-Venezuela border. Colombia started strong, but Uruguay finished out on top of the 84-minute game.

Uruguay plays against Portugal for World Cup spot

On March 10 in Lisbon and then again on March 24 in Montevideo, Portugal and Uruguay will play against each other in a two-leg play-off for the final qualifying spot in the Rugby World Cup. The winner will advance to Pool C as well as New Zealand, Scotland, Italy and Romania. France hosts the World Cup September 7 to October 20.
