The usual babble

By News at 04/26/08 09:03
This press release from E-Quity seems to be the usual speal about why it is great to live or invest in Uruguay.

The only thing I learned and to quote: Mortgages exist and can be arranged both for homeowners and buy to let purchases, while the Uruguayan law recognises that resident and foreign investors should have the same legal rights and protection..

Hmm... that bit about the mortgages seems not to be true from what everyone here says.. unless you want to put up the purchased real estate, any assets you own in Urugauy, plus a 100% cash deposit in the USA as security for the mortgage... Some say that income earned outside of Uruguay can't be used to qualify for a mortgage at all. It's not clear what the actual requirements are to obtain a mortgage in Uruguay, but the process seems anything but straightforward for an Uruguayan, much less an expat.

Finally, by following the links in this press release one learns that E-Quity seems to be selling some lots near the "Sheraton"... oh.. the Sheraton in Colonia.. and this is a good deal because of how well the economy is doing in Argentina! They do claim to offer financing...

Before you invest... come on down and live here for a while!

The falling US Dollar

By News at 04/26/08 08:57
The MercoPress article explains how Uruguay is working to keep the U.S. Dollar from falling too much against the Uruguayan peso.

It is a big issue for the Uruguayan exporters and I believe the expat community as well. The combination of local inflation and a dropping US dollar is a double whammy on prices.

Unfriendly U.S. Embassy, Montevideo

By News at 04/26/08 08:54
This seems to be a letter to the editor of the Sun Sentinel about a previously published article (but not linked to the letter... why not?) who had a bad experience at the U.S. Embassy in Montevideo.

This is of course a no-brainer. First, look at the U.S. Embassy in Montevideo, there is nothing about its appearance that would give you the idea that it is a friendly place to go. Second, look at the U.S. Government and you again don't find a friendly organization.

Putting them together isn't likely to change both appearances around.

Of course, the U.S. Embassy could make things a bit more user friendly. For example, immediately after passing through security, metal detectors, etc you walk just 20 yards and again are getting with security and a metal detector. There's no point in putting your belt back on (unless your pants are likely to fall down, trip you and give everyone waiting in line an unexpected show).

On the bright side, once you do get into the American Services department there is often no one ahead of you in line...
